Junk Love: Lilli Ann

Think of the last time you saw Disney's animated Alice in Wonderland. Imagine Alice finding that charming little cottage in Wonderland, and the White Rabbit rushing in, screaming, "Mary Ann! Mary Ann!" Now replace that with "Lilli Ann!", and you will understand how my brain works sometimes.
But on to other matters, like the fact that the Blackbird girls love Lilli Ann clothing, especially from the 1960s and before.... We're all about a tiny waist, dramatic collar and unusual sleeve--all things that epitomize Lilli Ann. Oh, and did I mention coats? (But we'll save those for the end....)

The company began in 1933, and they used a lot of unusual fabrics after WWII that became characteristic of the line. We have a fabulous variegated tweed suit in our shop (shown below) that was made of a silk/wool blend. Unfortunately, due to the fact that silk tends to become very fragile over time, and the nature of the weave itself, the wool strands often exert too much pressure on the silk threads, thereby causing the fabric to shred at stress points. Ours has this problem at the shoulders, which broke our hearts. But it's still gorgeous!

Here's a near-perfect suit in a variegated silk blend:

And here's the original ad for it from Vogue (1955):

The company's designers definitely loved fur collars, which you'll see on suits and coats. This green suit is another to-die-for example of Lilli Ann perfection:

I absolutely fell in love with this 1940s beaded suit. Even though there's some damage, it's fabulous:

This 1950s dress came as a bit of a surprise, as it was vastly different from most of the other Lilli Ann pieces that I've seen (but I have always focused mainly on suits and coats, so I suppose it makes sense). This one is pale gray with a pink, green, and metallic gold print.

But the thing I love the most is the wasp-waisted princess coat. This brown one is a fine example:

But THIS ONE IS MY DREAM FANTASY. I want to hold this coat, and love it and squeeze it (but not hard enough to damage the fabric!)...!

Could a coat possibly be any more fabulous than this? Why yes, actually. If you add Persian lamb to the sleeves:

And...I just went into cardiac arrest. I think we're done here.

Junk Love: Buggin'

We love bugs! Well, we love Dior bugs.... (But who doesn't?)

Now, we don't necessarily love them when they crawl on us. And the kind that suck blood are strictly prohibited. But if you're a beetle, bee, or butterfly, you are welcome anytime.

And for the record, we loved pull-down charts of bugs before it was cool. (We're kind of science nerds like that. Plus, we're suckers for brightly colored illustrations, regardless of the subject matter.) So I'm putting this gem on my Christmas list right now:

Junk Love: Show Your Spots

Leopards, cheetahs, and ocelots--oh my! I could seriously spend my entire day trolling the Internet for vintage photographs of women wearing spotted fur (or items inspired by such)....

And since I will never find a piece that I can 1) afford, and 2) actually wear, I have a vision of decorating some (mythical, invisible, magical) spare wall in my house with black and white photographs of beautiful women with beautiful exotic cats. If I can't afford the fur, I might as well enjoy the beauty of it!

On the Radar -- Meow!

Audrey Hepburn knows it's true...
It's the year of the cat!  (Well, not really...)  But imagine my delighted surprise when I started seeing cat eye sunglasses in all the designers' spring/summer collections!  We love a cat eye frame -- and we happen to think, both of us Blackbirds, that there is nothing quite as alluring as a raised eyebrow over dark tilted lenses.  Any girl can achieve that sex kitten perfection with cat eye sunnies.  (At least in our own minds we can.  And, oh, by the way, pun intended.)

Cat eyes are classic but have soooooo much more personality that many other frames.  You can play with colors and sizes, like other glasses, but think of the different tilts that are available.  You can go extreme or subtle, rhinestone bedecked flashy or quiet sophistication.  It's all in how you wear them and how bold you want to be.

Here's a sampling of some of the new offerings from current designers:

On The Radar -- Wonkavision

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013

We are candy freaks.  We love candy.  We don't necessarily eat candy all the time, but we always have it in the house.  Chocolate, jellybeans (they have to be Starburst!), Sweet Tarts, peppermint -- you name it, we've probably got it.

So imagine our delight when we started seeing pictures of designers' Spring/Summer 2013 lines.  Candy!  Suits done in slick candy colors with an almost sticky lollipop sheen.  Jelly style finishes to handbags, like the frosted plastic shoes we wore in the 1980s and 90s.  Candy dot designs for accessories, and sweet smelling caramel-like perfumes. Vibrant makeup with rhinestone candy dots.

Candy Bags from Furla, 2013

So indulge in these images of candy-inspired design.  Don't worry, we won't tell!  And we promise they are calorie-free!
